Description

Gold-plated bronze pieces of the Louisiana Purchase Exposition's official souvenir, catalogued as HK-300, sold for fifty cents, double what visitors paid for the bronze or gilt ones. They carry the standard design struck in the Mint exhibit: the busts of Napoleon and Jefferson on one side, the map of the United States with the purchase territory on the other, dated 1803 and 1904. The fair itself ran late. Its opening had been set for April 30, 1903, but the size of the project forced a delay of a year, and only dedication ceremonies, attended by President Roosevelt, took place on the original date. The gates finally opened on April 30, 1904, and closed on December 1, after roughly 20 million visits. Gold-plated bronze, 33 mm.
