Description

The 1903 (S) Philippine Fifty Centavos was struck at the San Francisco Mint and carries a small S mint mark on the reverse, to the left of the date. Fifty centavos of 1903 to 1906 follow the first standard: 13.48 grams of 90 percent silver and 10 percent copper, 30 millimeters across, with a reeded edge. The obverse is Melecio Figueroa's young woman in a flowing gown striking an anvil with a hammer, the smoking cone of Mount Mayon behind her, with the value above and FILIPINAS below. The reverse shows the American eagle over a striped shield, with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the date. No 1903-S fifty centavos were issued for circulation, and only two are known. Lyman Allen thought fewer than ten were struck as assay or trial pieces that should have been destroyed; the first was found in the early 1980s in a dealer's stock in Manila (Stack's Bowers, 2015). Catalogue numbers: KM-167. PCGS number 90343.
