Error
Description
Discovered by Laurence Galbraith in July 2005 and revised in 2010, this Philadelphia Mint Morgan Dollar is cataloged as die pair 189 under Classification III26 - C4a, carrying the Doubled Profile, Normal Date, Die Gouge Below 1 and at 0 designation. Broad die gouges define this variety: one appears at the top of the denticle below the 1 in the date, while a second broad vertical gouge runs from the denticle top through the 0. Despite the similar catalog numbering, this die marriage shares neither its obverse nor its reverse die with the 1903-P VAM-6, establishing them as entirely independent die pairs. Struck in 90% silver (0.7734 oz ASW), the 1903-P Morgan Dollar had a modest mintage of just over 4.6 million pieces, the second-to-last year of regular Philadelphia Morgan Dollar production before the series paused in 1904. The doubled profile designation refers to hub doubling visible on Liberty's facial features, adding die variety interest beyond the prominent gouging. VAM-6A's revised classification in 2010 refined Galbraith's original 2005 attribution, reflecting ongoing scholarship in the Morgan Dollar VAM community.
