Error
Description
Ronald Gapa's July 2018 discovery of the 1903-P VAM-18 revealed a Philadelphia Mint Morgan Dollar with a rare collar clash alongside multiple other features. Cataloged as 18 III2 14 with a C4k reverse, the obverse presents a low near date, doubled profile and cap top, and evidence of a collar clash — one of the less common production anomalies found on Morgan Dollars. The C4k reverse shows doubled reverse lettering. Die markers include a horizontal die polishing line on the middle tail feather and light die rust pits on the eagle, both providing secondary identification points. The combination of a collar clash with hub doubling and date positioning creates a variety with layered diagnostics that reward thorough examination. Collar clashes occur when the collar die makes unintended contact during the striking process, leaving distinctive marks.
