1903-P VAM-14

Description

Discovered in 2015, this Philadelphia Morgan dollar is cataloged as VAM-14 with classification III2 11 and a C4g reverse under the title Doubled 0 and Profile, Doubled Reverse Lettering. The obverse shows the 0 in the date slightly doubled at the top inside, and Liberty's profile is slightly doubled from the front hair edge down to the chin, making this one of the uncommon Morgan VAMs where portrait doubling accompanies date doubling. Two vertical polishing lines in Liberty's mouth serve as the obverse die marker. The reverse C4g die carries hub doubling on the legend and motto letters similar to the effect documented on VAM-10, establishing a connection between the two varieties in terms of reverse hubbing characteristics. The reverse die marker consists of three indents and raised dots plus a couple of shallow raised bars on the right side of the left L in DOLLAR. The 1903 Philadelphia Morgan dollar had a mintage of just over 4.6 million, and VAM-14's combination of obverse profile doubling with reverse legend doubling creates a variety with attribution points on both sides of the coin.
