1903-P VAM-12A
Error
Description
VAM-12A on the 1903 Morgan Dollar was eliminated in March 2025 as a duplicate of VAM-12. Discovered by Brent Fogelberg in 2017, the variety was classified III2 9 · C4f, entry 189. The defining feature — reeding indents at the rim from 1 to 2 o'clock opposite S UNU, produced by collar clash — is retained in the VAM-12 description. The hub doubling of the ear and the 3 digit, also shared with VAM-12, are the obverse counterparts to the collar-clash reverse. The same die pair produced VAMs 1C (delisted), 3, 11B, 12, and 12A — a complex web of die marriages from this single 1903 obverse. Current attributors should direct coins with these characteristics to VAM-12. The 1903 Morgan Dollar is a 90% silver Philadelphia Mint issue. The collar clash at 1–2 o'clock remains the most distinctive marker for this die family and was the feature that originally differentiated VAM-12A from its siblings.
