Error
Description
Discovered by Andrew Wojtowich in 2018, this Philadelphia Mint Morgan Dollar was designated VAM-11B under Classification III2 1, C4e, documenting Doubled Reverse Lettering and Collar Clash Obverse US-UN. Eliminated in March 2025 as a duplicate of VAM-12. On the obverse, Die 6 shows reeding indents at the rim from 1 to 2 o'clock opposite US-UN from a collar clash. The exact same die pair produced 1903-P VAM-1C (now delisted), 1903-P VAM-3, 1903-P VAM-11B, 1903-P VAM-12, and 1903-P VAM-12A. Struck in 90% silver at the Philadelphia Mint, the 1903-P Morgan Dollar comes from the penultimate year of original production before the series paused in 1904. The elimination of VAM-11B as a duplicate of VAM-12 illustrates the ongoing refinement of the VAM catalog, where improved attribution methods and cross-referencing sometimes reveal that separately listed varieties share identical die characteristics. The five-variety die pair linkage documents extensive use of this particular die marriage across multiple progressive die states.
