Description

Boston schoolchildren received this copper medal in 1901, the 125th anniversary of Evacuation Day, and its reverse copies the gold medal the Continental Congress voted to Washington on March 25, 1776, the only gold medal the federal government ever gave him. The scene shows Washington and four aides on horseback on Dorchester Heights, looking over the town and harbor as British ships withdraw, with two cannon and shot in the foreground and Latin legends recording that the enemy fled and Boston was recovered on March 17, 1776. The original, about 68 mm and more than seven ounces, was bought from the Washington family in 1876 by fifty Bostonians and given to the city for the Boston Public Library. Whitehead & Hoag of Newark, New Jersey, struck these copies. HK-131 is copper, 38 mm (Baker 52R).
