Description

The Saratoga Monument Association, incorporated on April 19, 1860, put out this undated medal around 1877 to support its monument to the Battle of Saratoga. The obverse shows the surrender of the British general Burgoyne to the American general Gates inside a center circle, under the Latin motto "Salus Regionum Septentrional," which Hibler and Kappen translate as deliverance of the northern territory; the association's name and its incorporation date run around the outside. The reverse shows the monument with "Saratoga Monument" above, in a beaded border. Hibler and Kappen list HK-119 as silver or silver-plated, without settling which, at 35 mm, and a bronze version as HK-119a. Many medals in this group of Revolutionary anniversaries were official in character, sold to help pay for the memorial or celebration they honored, and this one names its sponsor on its face.
