Description

HK-121 is the white metal member of the Wyoming centennial set of 1878, the only one given its own whole number; the other metals, bronzed copper, silver, brass, gilt copper and gold, run from HK-120 to HK-120d, all 36 mm. The occasion was the hundredth anniversary of the battle and massacre of Wyoming on July 3, 1778, shown on the obverse as a scene of attack by Indians inside a center circle. The reverse shows the memorial monument fenced in, dated 1778 and 1878, under the Latin motto "Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori." The committee in charge was chaired by Harrison Wright; the medal was designed and cut by George Morgan, and some pieces went out with a leaflet carrying their notarized statements about the medal and about the destruction of its dies.
