1898-O VAM-28A

Description

Discovered in 2015 by Nate Mailliard, this New Orleans Mint Morgan Dollar is designated VAM-28A under Classification III21, C3g, documenting a High O Set Left with Clashed Obverse t. On the obverse, a clashed die shows a partial incuse t from the word "Trust" on the reverse, visible in the right hair vee of Liberty's lower hair edge. The reverse carries a C3g die with the Type III O mintmark set high, upright, and to the left. Die pair number 181. Die markers include polishing lines and tiny raised dots visible in the gap between the eagle's wing and neck. Struck in 90% silver (0.7734 oz ASW) at the New Orleans Mint, the 1898-O Morgan Dollar comes from a year with moderate mintage. The clashed t from "Trust" transferred when the obverse and reverse dies struck each other without a planchet between them, impressing the raised lettering into the opposing die face. Mailliard's 2015 discovery identified the incuse t in Liberty's hair as the defining obverse diagnostic, while the wing-neck gap polishing lines and raised dots confirm the specific reverse die.
