Description

1898-O VAM-14A Dbld 8 Bottom, Very Near Date, O Set High, Bulge on Rev Discovered as VAM 23 by Laurence Galbraith, September 2005. Renumbered VAM 14A, June 2023 14A(revised) III2 9 · C3b (Dbld 8 Bottom, Very Near Date, O Set High, Bulge on Rev.) (181) Obverse III2 9 - Doubling on first 8 indistinct due to die wear. Reverse C3b - III O mint mark set high. Bulge on die below tail feathers and wreath bow from over polishing. DPIS - RH2/LH4 Emission Sequence Obverse: Reverse: Comments: Same obverse as 1898-O VAM-2 (and perhaps even the same exact die pair...). Can be confused with the 1898-O VAM-13A which also has a strong single clash and a very near date...check your Bow and date cracks!!! An unlistable clashed die stage is known Key difference between VAM 14 and 14A is that the doubling on the first 8 is indistinct on the 14A. The bulge on the reverse grows with die use. As both changes are gradual, there is a big gray area between 14 and 14A.
