Displaying bilateral die clash evidence on both the obverse and reverse, this 1898 Indian Head Cent documents the characteristic clash pattern that defines this denomination's most frequently encountered clash geometry. On the obverse, the letter C from CENT appears clashed in front of Liberty's eye, transferred when the reverse die's raised C struck the obverse die face during one or more impacts without a planchet between them. On the reverse, the nose and forehead of Liberty's portrait are clashed under and through the letter C in CENT, creating a complementary transferred impression where the obverse die's portrait features pressed into the reverse die face. This bilateral pattern — with both dies bearing transferred elements from the opposing die — confirms a direct die-to-die impact event and is the characteristic die clash signature for Indian Head Cents because the physical geometry of the die pair consistently places the C directly opposite Liberty's facial features, making these the highest-pressure contact zones and the first areas to transfer during any clash event. James Barton Longacre designed the Indian Head Cent with Liberty wearing a Native American feathered headdress on the obverse and an oak wreath with shield on the reverse (post-1860 design). Struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 1898 in bronze composition (95% copper, 5% tin and zinc), the coin weighs 3.11 grams with a diameter of 19.05 mm. The 1898 mintage of approximately 49.8 million pieces provided a large die population across which clash events could occur, and the consistent C/Portrait clash geometry documented here appears across virtually all years of the Indian Head Cent series from 1860 through 1909. Examination under 5x to 10x magnification best reveals the transferred elements, particularly the incuse C on the obverse which appears in the open field area in front of Liberty's profile.
