Description

Listed as not yet formally discovered (meaning no specimen had been submitted and confirmed through the standard VAM verification process at time of cataloging), the 1897-S VAM-15 Morgan Dollar carries the designation 15 III2 7 - C3e (Double Profile & 8, S Set High, Engraved Wreath Leaves). This complex variety encompasses three distinct features across both sides of the coin. The obverse shows a slightly doubled profile from the forehead down to the lips — an unusual and dramatic form of hub doubling that affects Liberty's facial contour rather than just isolated design elements — along with a doubled 8 at the lower left inside of both the lower and upper loops. Several diagonal polishing lines inside the ear serve as die markers. The reverse is classified C3e with an S mintmark set high above its standard position, and the wreath features engraved leaves where hand-engraving was applied to strengthen or modify the leaf details on the die. The community commentary from user Vampicker notes having seen this variety in hand, providing anecdotal confirmation even though formal discovery documentation remains incomplete. The Morgan Dollar was struck at the San Francisco Mint in 90% silver, weighing 26.73 grams at 38.1 mm diameter. The 1897-S issue had a mintage of approximately 5.825 million pieces, making it a mid-range date in terms of availability. The doubled profile from forehead to lips is the most compelling diagnostic feature, as facial profile doubling is relatively uncommon among Morgan Dollar VAMs and creates a visually striking effect where Liberty appears to have a slightly blurred or shadowed facial contour.
