Description
HK-786 (Schornstein 17) is the one-sided Spaulding & Co. piece: the lettered face of HK-785 with nothing on the back. Nine lines, the top one curved, lay out the argument of 1896. An ordinary dollar coin held 412 1/2 grains; this disc carries 823; and that much silver was the counterpart of a single gold dollar. The date Sept. 16th 1896 and the firm's name close the text, and the piece has no rim. That comparison sat at the center of the quarrel over free silver, which Bryan championed in 1896 and again in 1900, and the jeweler's version joins those of Tiffany and Gorham. Silver, 52 mm, matching the two-sided Spaulding piece in size.
