Description

The 1895 Princess Kaiulani Silver Medal, Medcalf-Russell 2HM-4, is a companion variety to the 2HM-3 medal, featuring a different die variety or design element while maintaining the same Princess Kaiulani commemorative theme. The existence of multiple medal varieties for Kaiulani in 1895 underscores the depth of sentiment surrounding the young princess and the lost Hawaiian monarchy. The distinction between 2HM-3 and 2HM-4 may involve differences in the portrait style, reverse design, edge treatment, or size. Both medals were produced in silver with proof finishes, indicating careful production for a discerning collector audience. Princess Kaiulani never returned to Hawaii as a reigning monarch. She returned to the islands in 1897 after Hawaiian annexation became inevitable, and died on March 6, 1899, at age 23. These 1895 medals, produced during her brief remaining years of hope for restoration, are among the most emotionally resonant pieces in Hawaiian numismatics.
