Description
The 1895-P Morgan Dollar is the "King of Morgan Dollars" — only 880 proofs were struck, no business-strike examples are confirmed, making every 1895-P a proof coin and among the most coveted items in the Morgan series. VAM-4, discovered March 2024 by John Dannreuther, is classified III2 4 · C3d, DPIS: RE3/LH5. The obverse shows a date slanted right, the 1 close to denticles, and a strong vertical die scratch through the base of E in LIBERTY. The reverse C3d presents horizontal polishing lines in the wreath bow, polishing lines in the wing-neck area slanted downward, and a scratch across the top of the eagle's right leg. VAM-4 is designated JD-3 in Dannreuther's "United States Proof Coins" Vol. III and JP Martin Die 3. The 880-coin mintage constrains attributable populations; any specimen with these features warrants immediate specialist consultation.
