Description

Discovered by John Coxe in July 2006, VAM-5 documents a low, far date on the 1895-O Morgan Dollar — the date is set lower and further right than the normal lateral position. Classified as III24 - C3a, this variety's defining characteristic is the positional anomaly of the date placement, which resulted from variations in how the date was punched into the working die. The 1895-O Morgan Dollar holds a prominent place in the Morgan series as one of the recognized condition rarities — while its mintage of 450,000 is not the lowest, survival rates in higher grades make it a challenging and valuable acquisition. Date positioning varieties on Morgan Dollars from key and semi-key dates carry added significance because the coins themselves are already sought by series collectors. The low, far date position distinguishes this die from the normal date placement used on the majority of 1895-O production dies, making it identifiable under careful examination.
