Description

Charles E. Barber's Liberty Head design, which served the quarter denomination from 1892 through 1916, appears on this first documented cud for the 1894-S Barber Quarter — a San Francisco Mint issue with a mintage of 2,648,821. Barber's obverse depicted a right-facing Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap with a laurel wreath, while his heraldic eagle reverse carried the denomination and national motto. Cuds on the Barber Quarter series result from the same mechanism as on any denomination: a section of the die rim fractures and separates, leaving a cavity that fills with metal during striking to produce a raised featureless mass along the coin's edge. The San Francisco Mint's operations during the 1890s served the commercial needs of the Pacific Coast economy, and its quarter production was considerably smaller than Philadelphia's output. First in the catalog for this date and mintmark, the variety documents a die failure on a turn-of-the-century silver quarter whose design had been in use for only two years at the time of striking.
