Description

The 1894 (O) Barber Dime is a dime produced at the New Orleans Mint as part of the Barber Dimes 1892-1916 series. With a mintage of 720,000, this is a scarce issue — the lower-mintage of the two mint variants. The obverse features Liberty facing right wearing a Phrygian cap topped by a laurel wreath, with the word LIBERTY on a headband and the reverse displays an agricultural wreath of corn, wheat, oak, and maple enclosing the words ONE DIME. The 1894-S with a mintage of 24 is one of the most famous rarities in all of American numismatics. Struck at the New Orleans Mint, which operated from 1838 to 1909 and produced coins prized for their historical Southern provenance. Estimated market value ranges from $91 to $4.1K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% silver, 10% copper, weighing 2.5 grams, 17.9 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #4804.
