Description

The Trenton Battle Monument was dedicated on October 19, 1893, and this medal pairs the column with a portrait of the man whose victory it honors. The reverse shows Washington's bust facing left, ringed by "To commemorate the battle of Trenton, N. J." and the date December 26. 1776., with the microscopic signature Bechtel Trenton just under the bust. The obverse shows the monument itself, ringed by "Trenton battle monument." and the dates of its "Corner stone laid Dec. 26, 1891" and dedication. Hibler and Kappen list HK-127 as bronze, 38 mm, and the same dies were also used for white metal (HK-127a), aluminum (HK-128) and brass (HK-128a). Many monument medals of this period were sold to help pay for the memorial itself, a point the HK listing makes for this whole group of Revolutionary War issues.
