1892-S VAM-17
Error
Description
Discovered in October 2025 by Bill Latour, VAM-17 of the 1892-S Morgan Dollar is a recent addition to the catalog, classified as 17 III2 1 - C3h (S Set Right and Tilted Right) with a rarity rating of 190 and DPIS values of RE3/C5. The 1892-S is a key semi-date in the Morgan series with a low mintage of 1,200,000 pieces, making any newly discovered variety from this date particularly noteworthy. On the obverse (die III2 1), the date is set at far right within the normal range. Die markers include fine, nearly horizontal lines in the D-shaped void in Liberty's hair and multiple diagonal lines in the bases of RT in LIBERTY. The reverse (die C3h) features a mintmark set right and tilted right, with a pattern of lines visible in the bow opening serving as the die marker. The DPIS (Die Pair Identification System) values of RE3/C5 provide precise positioning data for confirming die pair matches. As a 2025 discovery, this VAM demonstrates that new varieties continue to surface even in well-studied series more than a century after the coins were struck.
