1892-S VAM-7

Description

Discovered by Martin Field in January 1982, this San Francisco Morgan dollar holds a prestigious Top 100 Morgan VAM designation. Cataloged as VAM-7 under classification III2 2 with a C3b reverse, titled Doubled 892, S Tilted Right, it carries a rarity rating of 190. The obverse derives from the 1892-S VAM-2 die after polishing reduced the original doubling, leaving only curved lines in the top loops of the 8 and 9 as remnants of the earlier hub impression. The S mintmark sits with a slight rightward tilt on the C3b reverse. A date crack visible on some VAM-2 specimens appears on all VAM-7 examples, confirming the emission sequence relationship between these two listings. Notably, VAM-7 specimens have been found in third-party grading service holders attributed as VAM-2, making reholder candidates a productive hunting ground for cherrypickers. The Top 100 designation reflects the historical significance of this polished die state and its connection to the scarce 1892-S date in the Morgan series.
