Description
Wilhelm Mayer of Stuttgart struck the Liberty Head design in aluminum both as proofs and as ordinary business strikes, and HK-222 covers both; this page is described as a proof. The high-relief Liberty head faces left within a ring of stars, signed W.M. and dated 1892, and the reverse frames the landing of Columbus with 1492 and a legend offering the 400th anniversary to the American people, closing with "United We Stand Divided We Fall." Eglit gives it the number 51, shared with the gilt HK-221. Hibler and Kappen record bronze (HK-220) and white metal (HK-222b) from the same high-relief dies, and give the low-relief aluminum piece its own number, HK-222a. A German maker's medal for an American anniversary, it belongs to the Chicago group. HK-222 is aluminum, 35 mm.
