Description

Lower relief and beaded borders set HK-220a apart from the high-relief Liberty Head pieces that Wilhelm Mayer of Stuttgart struck for the 1892 anniversary. The design is otherwise close: a head of Liberty facing left inside a circle of stars, with the date 1892 and Mayer's W.M., and on the reverse a Columbus landing scene over 1492, inside a 400th-anniversary dedication addressed to the American people and the motto "United We Stand Divided We Fall." Hibler and Kappen list the low-relief version in bronze (HK-220a, 35 mm), gilt (HK-221a) and aluminum (HK-222a); the high-relief set begins with the bronze HK-220. The listing places these with the Chicago exposition, which was dedicated that October. This page is the low-relief bronze piece.
