1892-O VAM-4B

Description

Assigned in 2009, the 1892-O VAM-4B Morgan dollar was formerly designated VAM-4A before reclassification. It carries the III2 3 obverse paired with a C3b reverse under the designation Doubled 8 and Hair Split Ends, High O, Clashed Obverse n and st. The obverse shows strong die clashes with a faint double arc of the incuse letter n from IN visible in front of Liberty's neck, and a faint incuse st from TRUST showing in the right hair vee of the lower hair edge. The same dies produced three documented die states: 1892-O VAM-4, VAM-4A, and VAM-4B, so photographs from the VAM-4 listing remain relevant for identifying the shared die characteristics. This sequential die state relationship means the core design features, including the doubled 8, split hair ends, and high O mint mark, remain constant while progressive die wear and clashing distinguish the three stages. Collectors working through New Orleans Morgan dollars from 1892 can use the clashed n and st as an initial screening tool, then examine die state indicators to determine which of the three related VAM designations applies.
