Description
Wilhelm Mayer of Stuttgart, Germany, struck this Liberty Head piece to mark four centuries since 1492; his initials W.M. are below the head. The obverse is a Liberty head in high relief facing left, inside a circle ringed with stars and dated 1892. The reverse sets a landing of Columbus, dated 1492, in a circle inside the dedication "Dedicated to the American People in Honor of the 400th Anniversary of the Discovery of America," with "United We Stand Divided We Fall" at the bottom. The high-relief dies are listed in bronze (HK-220, 35 mm, Eglit 51A), gilt (HK-221), aluminum (HK-222) and white metal (HK-222b), and a low-relief set with beaded borders as HK-220a to HK-222a. Mayer also made larger and smaller sizes. This is the bronze high-relief striking.
