1892-1893 So-Called Dollar HK-186, Horticultural Building
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
A thousand feet long and 250 wide, the Horticultural Building on this reverse is lettered with a cost of "$300,000" beneath its name, all inside a beaded border, and the other side carries the Columbus bust in a wreath shared by the Exhibition Palace dollars. HK-186 is the brass striking with a reeded edge, Eglit 124, and Hibler and Kappen list the same design in silver-plated brass (HK-186a) and aluminum (HK-187). The Horticultural face was also used as the obverse of HK-181a and HK-181b, backed by the Forestry and Transportation buildings. A different Horticultural Building, signed OA, appears on the Ferris wheel piece HK-172. The exposition was dedicated in October 1892, opened by President Cleveland in May 1893 and closed that November. HK-186 is brass, 35 mm.
