Description
A silver plating over brass and a plain edge distinguish HK-185c from its two companions, the reeded aluminum HK-185a and the brass HK-185b, all struck from the same pair of building dies. One face shows the Art Palace, "320 x 500 Feet," built for 670,000 dollars; the other shows the Agricultural Building, "500 x 800 Feet," built for 618,000. There is no portrait. Silver plating over brass appears on several other designs in this run as well, for example HK-186a and HK-196a. The listing puts the group at 35 mm. The Art Palace survives today, rebuilt in stone, as the Museum of Science and Industry. The exposition behind these pieces honored the four hundredth anniversary of 1492, with a dedication in 1892. This is the silver-plated brass striking.
