Description

Brass is the metal of HK-183b, the second striking of a design that sets the U.S. Government Building against the Mines and Mining Building, with no portrait on either face. The government side gives its building as "345 x 415 Feet 3.3 Acres" and its cost as 400,000 dollars; the mining side measures its hall at 550 by 700 feet, at a cost of 265,000, in smaller type. Each face was first used as the reverse of a Columbus-bust piece (HK-182 and HK-178). The aluminum version, with a reeded edge, is HK-183a; the listing does not describe the edge of the brass one. Between President Cleveland's opening on May 1, 1893, and its final day that November, the fair drew more than 27 million visits after its dedication in October 1892. Like its aluminum mate, it measures 35 mm.
