Description

Federal sponsorship set this exposition apart: acts of Congress in 1890 settled a bitter contest among cities to host it, created a National Commission, and added a five-million-dollar grant to the money raised by Chicago and by private subscription. The reverse of this aluminum medal pictures the U.S. Government Building, with its size of 345 by 415 feet, its area of 3.3 acres and its cost, 400,000 dollars. A wreathed bust of Columbus fills the obverse. HK-183 is the aluminum striking of a design also made in reeded-edge brass (HK-182) and silver-plated brass (HK-182a), Eglit 130, and the size for the set is given as 35 mm. The Government Building face was later combined with the Mines and Mining Building on HK-183a and HK-183b. The fair was dedicated in October 1892.
