Description

Columbus faces left in a wreathed circle on the obverse of HK-181, the legend around him spelling the fair's name with a V in place of the U and closing with "Chicago 1893" between stars. The reverse stacks two halls: Forestry, 208 by 525 feet, built for 100,000 dollars, and Transportation, 250 by 960 feet, built for 370,000. These were two of the twelve great exhibition palaces that, with some two hundred smaller buildings, put about 250 acres under roof in what became known as the White City. HK-181 is the aluminum version, Eglit 128, of the reeded-edge brass HK-180, and the listing sets the size of the group at 35 mm. The same reverse appears with a Horticultural Building obverse on HK-181a. The exposition opened its gates in May 1893 after a dedication in October 1892.
