Description

Square in plan, 260 feet on a side, and lettered with a cost of 450,000 dollars, the Administration Building fills the reverse of this aluminum piece inside a beaded border. The fair it served was run jointly by a National Commission that Congress created in 1890 and by the exposition company chartered that April, which raised ten million dollars from the public in stock and bonds. On the obverse Columbus appears in profile to the left, framed by an open wreath, with the fair's name curving around him. HK-177 is the aluminum partner of the brass HK-176, and both carry the number Eglit 118; the listing gives the size for the pair as 35 mm. This design belongs to the Exhibition Palace series, struck for the exposition dedicated on October 21, 1892, and opened the following May.
