Description

Eight women's heads, each with a different style of hair, circle a globe turned to show the western hemisphere on the obverse of this aluminum medal; the listing gives no names for them. The reverse is simple by comparison: inside a wreath open at the top, "Columbian Exposition 1492 Chicago 1892-1893" in five lines. Hibler and Kappen place it with HK-174 as a world globe dollar, though that piece puts the fair and the landing scene on two globes and is larger. HK-175 is aluminum, 38 mm, catalogued as Eglit 556. The fair it marks was planned to tell the story of four centuries of progress since 1492; it was dedicated in October 1892, opened the next May, and welcomed exhibits from every state and territory and from fifty foreign nations.
