Description

The Horticultural Building that fills one face of this aluminum medal carries a microscopic OA, with an unbarred A, at its lower right; on other Chicago fair pieces the listing reads those letters as the mark of the modeler A. O. Ameis. The building is captioned below and circled by "World's Columbian Exposition." The obverse is the Ferris wheel side first used on HK-171: the wheel inside a ring of leaves, its height, weight and capacity lettered around it, and "The Ferris Wheel" with "One of the Wonders of the World" outside, signed Childs Chicago. A third pairing of that wheel, with a standing woman on the back, is HK-173. HK-172 is aluminum, 38 mm, and has no Eglit number in the listing. The wheel was the fair's great novelty, and the exposition itself had been dedicated in October 1892.
