1892-1893 So-Called Dollar HK-164, 93) Il Bird'S-Eye View Dollar
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
May 1, 1893, the day President Cleveland opened the Chicago world's fair, is the date this aluminum medal celebrates. Its reverse, in seven lines, reads "Souvenir of the Opening of the Worlds Columbian Exposition Chicago May 1st 1893." The obverse shows the grounds and buildings from above, under the three-line heading "Birds Eye View of the Worlds Columbian Exposition Chicago" with 1893 below. That view covered almost 700 acres beside Lake Michigan, most of it in Jackson Park, which had been an empty stretch before the builders arrived; only the Fine Arts Palace remains, rebuilt in limestone as the Museum of Science and Industry. HK-164 is aluminum, 37 mm, Eglit 547. The exposition had been dedicated with ceremonies on October 21, 1892, months before the gates opened to paying visitors.
