Description

Gilt finish is what marks HK-221 within the set of Liberty Head dollars made in Germany by Wilhelm Mayer of Stuttgart. It shares the high-relief dies of the bronze HK-220: on one side a head of Liberty turned left, encircled by stars, with W.M. below and 1892 at the bottom; on the other the landing of Columbus in a circle dated 1492, with a dedication "to the American People" for the 400th anniversary of the discovery and the motto "United We Stand Divided We Fall." Eglit lists the gilt piece as 51 and the bronze as 51A. Aluminum (HK-222) and white metal (HK-222b) complete the high-relief set, and there is a low-relief gilt piece too, HK-221a. Mayer also struck the design in sizes too large and too small for the listing. The group is 35 mm.
