Description

HK-759 is an aluminum medal for the unveiling of the Ulysses S. Grant monument in Chicago's Lincoln Park on October 7, 1891. The obverse shows Grant on horseback facing left between the words "U. S. Grant" and "Monument"; the reverse gives the date and place, says the statue was "Erected by the Citizens of Chicago," and is ringed by a legend calling the piece a memento of the unveiling. Hibler and Kappen remark that statues like this one were usually paid for by public subscription, with medal and souvenir sales often bringing in a good share of the money. A variant, HK-759a, pairs the same equestrian side with the reverse praising aluminum that also appears on a Columbian Exposition souvenir (HK-161). A second type, HK-760, shows Grant's bust and the motto "Let Us Have Peace." Rulau Chi 31. Aluminum, 37 mm.
