Description
Neptune, seated and turned to the left, works a lever with his right hand while his left arm circles a pipe pouring out water on the obverse of HK-589b, with "Nassau Water Works" around and "Commcd. July / 1856" below, the date the works were begun. Microscopic initials F.B.S. & H. sit on the base. The reverse shows the pumping building with its tall smokestack and the full signature, F.B. Smith & Hartmann, on its base; the legend records "Water Introduced in the City of Brooklyn / December 1858," and below the building "Celebrated April / 1859." HK-589b is white metal, 33 mm, Rulau NY 2008. The same dies were struck in bronze (HK-589a) and silver (HK-589c).
