Description
The sheriff of San Joaquin County gave out this aluminum medal when the new Stockton courthouse was dedicated in 1891. The reverse says so in seven lines: "Compliments of the Sheriff's office Tho's Cunningham Sheriff Stockton San Joaquin Co, Cal." The obverse shows the courthouse with "Dedicated A D 1891." beneath, and the microscopic signature of the engraver C. L. Chapelle on the base of the building. HK-623 is aluminum, 38 mm, and it is the only piece Hibler and Kappen list for the dedication. They give no account of the ceremony, so the medal's own lettering carries what is known: a courthouse finished in Stockton in 1891, and a county sheriff, Thomas Cunningham, whose office paid its compliments to the public with this souvenir of the building.
