Description

HK-622 is the white metal version of the official medal for the centennial of the South Carolina General Assembly's first meeting in Columbia, held in 1791 and celebrated there from May 13 to 15, 1891. The obverse is lettered throughout, giving both years and both occasions; the reverse shows the state seal with a woman and a man standing at either side and a winged figure blowing a horn above. Hibler and Kappen stress that the medal marks the legislature's first sitting at Columbia, not South Carolina's statehood, and that the centennial committee sponsored it. The main exercises and a ball took place on the grounds of the South Carolina Agricultural and Mechanical Society, with parades, band concerts and fireworks around them. The copper version is HK-621. This piece is white metal, 38 mm.
