Description
The Bennington Battle Monument, a plain limestone obelisk 300 feet high designed by J. Ph. Rinn of Boston, stands on the reverse of HK-152a with the words "Dedicated" and "Aug. 19. 1891" beside it. The monument association had been formed in the early 1880s, laid the first stone with Masonic ceremony on August 16, 1887, and at the 1891 dedication its president, former governor Prescott, handed the shaft over to the state, accepted by Gov. Page. The obverse pairs Stark and Seth Warner in twin circles with the battle date and Vermont's admission in 1791. Philadelphia medalist William H. Warner struck the piece. This is the bronze version of the design first listed in brass as HK-152. Bronze, 38 mm.
