Description
This commemorative so-called dollar (HK-141) from 1882 celebrates Upland-Chester. Mardi Gras commemoratives from New Orleans, including pieces for the Rex parade, represent the festive side of regional medal production during this period. The bronze composition of this piece reflects the medallic tradition dating to classical antiquity. Bronze so-called dollars typically survive in better condition than white metal examples due to the alloy's greater hardness and durability. State and regional medals were typically commissioned by local committees and struck by private manufacturers. Silver and white metal compositions predominate. The Hibler-Kappen catalog has been updated and expanded since its 1963 first edition, with later researchers adding newly discovered varieties and extending coverage into the modern era. The so-called dollar series documents American history through the lens of the events, people, and places that communities chose to commemorate. Each piece reflects not only its subject but the values and aspirations of the era in which it was produced.
Rarity Notes
Examples of HK-141 are scarce among so-called dollar collectors. Gilded Age commemorative medals survive in varying numbers depending on original mintage and subsequent preservation.
