Description
Silver is the third of the metals Hibler and Kappen list for the Upland-Chester medal of 1882: white metal (HK-141), bronze (HK-141a) and silver, HK-141b, this piece. The design pairs William Penn's bust, named in the borders, with a wreath around "Upland / 1682 / Chester / 1882," recalling the renaming of the old Swedish settlement when Penn arrived in the autumn of 1682. Chester was where his first Assembly met and passed the province's opening laws, among them the power to establish cities. The Bicentennial Association, formed in Philadelphia from commercial, fraternal and civic bodies, ran the celebration with modest city and state funds and no federal money. Silver, 35 mm.
