Description

This 1891 so-called dollar (HK-151) commemorates Vermont Centennial. Mardi Gras commemoratives from New Orleans, including pieces for the Rex parade, represent the festive side of regional medal production during this period. The bronze composition of this piece reflects the medallic tradition dating to classical antiquity. Bronze so-called dollars typically survive in better condition than white metal examples due to the alloy's greater hardness and durability. State and regional medals were typically commissioned by local committees and struck by private manufacturers. Silver and white metal compositions predominate. The HK numbering system established by Hibler and Kappen in 1963 brought order to hundreds of previously uncataloged American commemorative medals, many of which had been ignored by mainstream numismatic references. The so-called dollar series documents American history through the lens of the events, people, and places that communities chose to commemorate. Each piece reflects not only its subject but the values and aspirations of the era in which it was produced.

Rarity Notes

Strikings of HK-151 are scarce. Gilded Age medals were often distributed at events, with many entering circulation as pocket pieces rather than being preserved as collectibles.
