Description
This commemorative so-called dollar (HK-125d) from 1883 celebrates Battle of Groton Heights. Regional commemoratives from this era reflect the Gilded Age's enthusiasm for civic identity, with communities large and small commissioning medals to assert their place in the American narrative. The white metal composition reflects the practical economics of medal production in this era. Tin-based alloys allowed manufacturers to produce large quantities at low cost while maintaining acceptable detail and appearance. State and regional medals were typically commissioned by local committees and struck by private manufacturers. Silver and white metal compositions predominate. The Hibler-Kappen catalog has been updated and expanded since its 1963 first edition, with later researchers adding newly discovered varieties and extending coverage into the modern era. This piece is a variant of HK-125, distinguished by differences in composition, die state, or striking characteristics that merit a separate catalog entry in the Hibler-Kappen reference.
Rarity Notes
So-called dollars from the Gilded Age were produced in limited quantities for distribution at events or through numismatic channels. White Metal examples of HK-125d are moderately scarce, with surviving pieces ranging from well-worn pocket pieces to carefully preserved specimens.
