Strike Type
Coin Details
Description
The 1891 Pittsburg & Mexican Mining so-called dollar (HK-149) is a commemorative piece from the State & Regional Commemoratives series. Regional commemoratives from this era reflect the Gilded Age's enthusiasm for civic identity, with communities large and small commissioning medals to assert their place in the American narrative. Struck in tin, this piece features the soft, silvery-white surface characteristic of this traditional medal metal. Tin commemorative pieces were affordable alternatives to silver at the time of issue. State and regional medals were typically commissioned by local committees and struck by private manufacturers. Silver and white metal compositions predominate. So-called dollars — defined as privately issued medals approximately the size of a silver dollar — encompass one of the most diverse and historically rich collecting fields in American numismatics.
Rarity Notes
Examples of HK-149 are moderately scarce among so-called dollar collectors. Gilded Age commemorative medals survive in varying numbers depending on original mintage and subsequent preservation.
