1891 Indian Head Cent Retained Cud (Reverse 3:00–5:00)

Description

This 1891 Indian Head Cent exhibits a retained cud on the reverse spanning from the 3 o'clock to the 5 o'clock position. In a retained cud, a piece of the die cracks and begins to separate from the die face but remains loosely attached rather than falling away completely, producing a raised but slightly displaced area on struck coins that retains partial design detail along with visible crack lines delineating the broken segment. This specimen represents a later die state than a pre-cud variety also documented for the same die position on the 1891 reverse, establishing a clear die deterioration progression from initial cracking through retained fracture — a sequence that documents the mechanical failure mode of this specific die as it accumulated stress damage during production. The Indian Head Cent was designed by James Barton Longacre, with the obverse featuring Liberty wearing a Native American feathered headdress and the reverse displaying a laurel wreath (used from 1860 onward, replacing the earlier laurel wreath without shield design). Struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 1891, the coin was produced in bronze composition (95% copper, 5% tin and zinc) weighing 3.11 grams with a diameter of 19.05 mm. The 1891 had a mintage of approximately 47.1 million pieces. The 3 o'clock to 5 o'clock position on the reverse corresponds to the right side of the wreath, and the retained nature of the cud means that some wreath detail remains visible within the affected area, distinguishing it from a full cud where the die fragment's absence would produce a completely featureless raised area.
