1890-S VAM-1H

Description

Originally cataloged in 2010, the 1890-S VAM-1H has been eliminated from the active VAM listing and reassigned to VAM-35, a reclassification that collectors and dealers should note when encountering older references to this designation. Classified as 1H III2 1 - C3a (Polishing Lines Face, Gouge Leg) (188), the obverse displays die polishing lines across Liberty's face and in the hair, along with die scratches at the upper inside and lower outside of the ear. The date sits at the right edge of normal lateral position. On the reverse, designated C3a, a small die gouge appears at the outside of the eagle's right leg. Eliminations in the VAM catalog occur when further research determines that a listed variety is actually a die state of another already-cataloged number, reflecting the self-correcting nature of the attribution system. The San Francisco Mint produced substantial quantities of Morgan dollars in 1890, and the polishing lines across Liberty's face indicate the Mint's efforts to extend die life or remove evidence of earlier die clashes. This entry is preserved as a historical record of the original 1H classification and its subsequent consolidation into VAM-35.
