Description

Discovered by John Coxe in July 2006, VAM-1E on the 1890-S Morgan Dollar documents heavy die file and polishing lines on the reverse — evidence of Mint personnel attempting to extend a deteriorating die's working life by smoothing its surface. The reverse die, classified C3a, shows a Type IV S mint mark from San Francisco positioned centered and tilted slightly left. Die filing and polishing were common maintenance practices at 19th-century Mint facilities, where skilled workers hand-finished dies to remove clash marks, polish out light cracks, or restore sharpness to worn areas. The plate notation 1E III2 1 with C3a places this variety within the VAM-1 die family, where it shares its obverse die with VAM-1C and uses the same dies as VAM-40 — die-sharing relationships that help researchers reconstruct the sequence in which dies were paired and repaired during production. San Francisco struck Morgan Dollars throughout the series' 1878-1904 and 1921 production span, and 1890-S represents a mid-series issue. The heavy file lines on this reverse tell a story of industrial pragmatism: rather than retire an expensive die, Mint workers attempted to rehabilitate it.
